PROLOGUE
They would never find her. He was sure of that. He had hidden her where no one would ever look for someone supposed to be alive and travelling west. She was deep beneath the ground outside the fence of the old country churchyard now, separated from the consecrated dead. He smiled at the irony. She’d spent her life mocking the gods, ancient and modern. Now came the reckoning. Soon she’d face the Scales of Anubis. He knew her heart weighed more than the feather of Maat. It was made of stone. Her soul would not be granted immortality. She would be given to Ammit, the crocodile goddess, to devour and destroy. He didn’t care. She was gone. She would never hurt them again. He finished the letters—his confession—and sealed them away. She’d be amused if she’d known their hiding place and that angered him, doing something to amuse her. He looked around the room as darkness fell. Candlelight flickered on the ancient artifacts, making their shadows dance. He knew Anubis would judge him too, for taking a life.
