SEPIA
I am sepia now,
like an old photograph, cracked and faded,
torn where tomorrow used to be.
Once I was in full colour.
I was bright green in spring,
walking near waterfalls, climbing through woods, writing in cafes and corners.
I was scarlet in summer,
sunning on sand, building beach fires, swimming at midnight in skin and seaweed.
In autumn I was yellow,
strolling through city streets, smiling at strangers, watching the patterns rain makes on ponds and pathways.
In winter I was blue,
sparkling on ice, shining up at stars, warming myself with flames and feelings.
I did not know that all these colours mixed together—green, scarlet, yellow, blue— tangled, twisted, flooding, bleeding, would end with sepia.
The mixing was so slow, so nuanced and deceptive that I did not see it coming.
I disappeared into the background of the world I moved through,
part of the chorus, the props, the scenery.
A secondary player, an extra.
I did not plan for this, this change from here to almost gone.
This fading.
Is there a place for sepia now?
A safe and quiet place where sepia glows and thrives and does not care?
Is there enough colour left, enough light, enough hope, enough time
to make a mark?
